Taboo Sandton has closed its infamous red door, less than a year after club boss Chris Coutroulis died.

The popular nightclub was a hit with celebrities and patrons in Johannesburg.

TABOO CLOSES ITS DOORS

Taking to Instagram fellow club boss Perry Mermigas revealed the sad news.

Sharing a picture of the iconic red door, he posted: “Taboo closes its door for the last time today. Chris Coutroulis gave us 19 years of the ultimate clubbing experience and we pay tribute to him for this. We all have so many fond memories of the nights behind these doors.

“I can still see Chris standing in front of the door with a big smile on his face as you approached the red carpet at the circle of success. That is how we should remember Taboo and its founder Chris”.

Mermigas – who managed other clubs in the Taboo group – vowed to “rebuild” the brand Chris Coutroulis worked hard for.

He added: “Chris would have fittingly said today, ‘The show must go on, don’t wait for me’. Therefore with that in mind and to carry his legacy forward, I promise to rebuild something great and exciting. It’s a new era but still with the Chris Coutroulis flair. Watch this space. Coming soon”.

CHRIS COUTROULIS DEATH

The closure of Taboo comes seven months after Chris Coutroulis died from a lengthy battle with Covid-19 in November.

The 52-year-old was married to former Miss South Africa Vanessa Carreira and they shared four children together. Chris and Vanessa owned the group of Johannesburg nightclubs which also includes Boa, Cocoon, and Onyx amongst others.

Chris and Vanessa were notoriously private about their relationship but made regular public appearances at events at the string of clubs, including Taboo.

Vanessa was also scarce on social media, although one of her last posts was dedicated to her husband on his birthday, which also is their wedding anniversary.
