Craft beer has taken a turn for the bizarre with Iceland’s newest niche drink… whale testicle beer.
Needless to say, you’d best have cojones of steel if you’re going to try this bevvie out. Stedji brewery’s Hvalur 2 beer is to be flavoured with smoked fin whale testicles — just fyi, fin whales are an endangered species — according to an old Icelandic method.
The Scandinavian countries generally get a lot of flack for their treatment of marine mammals, especially the traditional annual hunts that take place in countries like Iceland and Norway. Making beer from whales though, that has peeved animal rights associations off even more.
The beer was made in limited quantities, to usher in the Icelandic midwinter month of Thorri. “We want to create a true Thorri atmosphere, and therefore we decided to use smoked testicles from fin whales for flavouring the beer,” says Dagbjartur Ariliusson of the Stedji microbrewery.
Many have described Iceland’s whaling tradition as immoral and it even had a two year ban on whaling, which was lifted in 2013. They’ve since resumed the process, exporting most of their kills to Japan.
