This is an amazing initiative and one that you can help fund.

The aim of the event is to make it possible for every aspiring young, talented and dedicated bassist to access the best opportunities to further their education.

That’s why Leon Bosch will be joining the South African National Youth Orchestra this December to help host this first-ever course exclusively for the double bass.

Accompanying Leon Bosch will be Roxanne Steffen, principal bassist at the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Nick Scales from the School of Music at West Texas A&M University, Jeff Bradetich and Gudrun Raschen from the University of North Texas College of Music.

More about the course

The course is called ‘What It Takes’ and aims to cater to the specific needs of the participants.

According to the organisers, “The course covers many aspects of professional musicianship including audition preparation, marketing of yourself as a musician, posture/injury prevention, performing with an orchestra, music history related to your instrument and individual master classes from top professionals.

It gives insight into solo, chamber and orchestral playing as well as teaching and other career options. Each course also has an aspect of music education advocacy, and we will make sure to include people new to the bass in our audiences for our concerts, especially children.”

The course will run from 9 – 12 December 2018

How you can help

There are many double bass players across South Africa who are unable to afford the course or the accommodation, catering and transport for their time in Cape Town.

The cost of the course is roughly R4000 (about USD265) and all money raised will go directly towards making sure that as many students are able to attend as possible.
