South African TV personalities Somizi and Pearl Thusi have shared their thoughts on team South Africa’s Tokyo Olympic outfits. Taking to social media on Monday, both celebs shared that they were not at all impressed with the animal print and khaki clothes.

The designers of the outfits have spoken out and shared that they were merely following a brief.

Team SA outfits: It’s a no from Somizi

Idols SA judge Somizi took to Instagram on Monday morning to share a “Happy New Week” video. In the clip, the personality asked people to adhere to COVID-19 regulations so that the country can continue to ease lockdown regulations.

“Can you please behave so that we are not taken back to another level?” he can be heard saying. He then went on to touch on Team SA’s outfits for the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony on Friday 23 July – and let’s just say, he was not impressed.

“Haaa guys, why were they wearing Zebracom? I was not impressed. Why do we always get it wrong?” he commented while mentioning how dapper other teams such as Ghana and Nigeria looked.

Queen Sono actress Pearl Thusi also echoed Somizi’s view, as well as that of many other South Africans on the outfits:

“So just to be clear – I hated the South African Olympic costume too but I have a question, Does this mean that only traditional costumes (as we have many) and designs represent South Africa well?“

The designers speak out

The four designers of the team SA Tokyo Olympics have explained the reason behind the highly criticised safari-themed clothes. Nompumelelo Mjadu, Sipho Lushaba, Mbali Zulu and Sandile Sikhakhane worked with Mr Price to create the apparel.

According to an IOL article, they worked according to a brief on how the clothes should look.

“We were briefed about what they wanted and what they would love to wear. From there, we came with making a print of our own inspired by the Mandela dream,” said Lushaba.

He also went on to say that people reacted the way they did because they did not know what the inspiration was behind the attire.
