South African Mint recently unveiled new R50 and R500 coins to commemorate 25 years of democracy in South Africa.

“2019 marks a monumental 25 years of Constitutional Democracy for the nation of South Africa,” said SA Mint. “To reinvigorate national pride, the South African Mint released the SA25 themed coin range under the series ‘Celebrating South Africa”.

SA Mint went on to develop the range, “giving everyone an opportunity to reflect on our diverse identity as a country”.

R50 – Bronze Alloy Coin

The R50 collector’s coin bears two hands and fingers intertwined as a symbol of unity between the people of South Africa. The phrase “We the people” has become a commonly known global phrase, extolling democracy.

According to SA Mint, this coin was designed by artist Peter Mammes who wanted to depict the ethnicity, diversity and an ethos of equality of the people of the nation.

“His creation engenders a sense of ‘ubuntu’ and celebrates our togetherness as a people.”

R50 – Sterling Silver Coin

Artist Lady Skollie’s design portrays the famous images of voting polling stations in 1994 when the nation attained its independence.

R500 – Gold Coin

The reverse of the R500 pure-gold coin depicts the main entrance of South Africa’s highest court, the Constitutional Court.

These coins depict the national coat of arms, year of issue ‘2019’, and the words ‘South Africa’ written in all the official languages.
