A Russian woman has been apprehended after selling her newborn son for $3600 (R61 000). According to reports, the woman was taken into custody in May this year on suspicion of human trafficking. The woman gave birth to the boy in April and only five days later sold him off to a couple who wanted to be parents.

Shortly after she received the money, police received a tip-off about the transaction which led to her arrest.

Desperate times call for ruthless measures?

An unnamed Russian woman has been detained by Russian authorities after she sold her baby in order to get rhinoplasty.

According to The Star, the 33-year-year woman gave birth to her son on 25 April this year and just five days later, handed the baby over to a desperate couple who couldn’t have a child of their own.

The New York Post reports that the woman signed a “waiver for the rights to the child.” She then received a down payment of $350 (almost R6k).

Four weeks later, on 26 May she received the rest of the cash and was finally about to get the nose job she was hoping for.

Unfortunately for her, a whistleblower informed police officials and she was dragged to a jail cell before she was able to lay on an operating table.

‘Investigations are underway’

The couple who “bought the baby” confirmed that the woman gave them the child and the child’s birth certificate but denied paying for the baby.

Instead, they said that they only gave her money to pay for her nose job so that she could “breathe better”.

“Currently, a series of investigative actions are being carried out, aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the crime committed and consolidating evidence of the suspect’s guilt,” the official Russian statement reportedly read.

Meanwhile, it is unclear what charges the couple will be facing.
