You’ve probably heard the news by now; Redro fish paste and Pecks Anchovette have sadly been discontinued.

And stock on shelves are fast selling out too, claim insiders who’ve advised consumers to get their hands on whatever is available.

REDRO AND PECKS ANCHOVETTE OFFICIALLY CANNED

According to local distributor Pioneer Foods, the products are no longer in demand.

Pecks Anchovettes was formally introduced to the South African market in the 1960’s. Redro, developed from a local family recipe, has been available to consumers for over 90 years.

The brands once enjoyed massive popularity in the local savoury spread market, claim Business Insider.

For Redro fish paste, this was aided by the company’s memorable television advertisement. The nostalgic ad starred a young boy who mispronounced the brand as “wedwo”.

But times and tastebuds are changing, and consumers no longer reaching for the minced fish recipe

A Pioneer Foods spokesperson told Business Insider: “We communicated this to our customers, stopped production and discontinued the sale of related items in December 2021”.

WHERE TO SHOP FOR FISH PASTE

It goes without saying that consumers are frantically searching on where to get their hands on their final fix of fish paste.

According to Pioneer Foods, products will “remain available for purchase as long as the retailers have stock on hand”.

Business Insider, reveals that both products can be found sporadically in various online stores around the country.

“Woolworths and Pick n Pay already appear to have no online stock left. It seems that Shoprite and Checkers have some jars lingering around in obscure stores”.

According to the publication, stores in the Western Cape are drying up, but stock can still be found in De Aar, Upington and Colesberg.

It added: “Durban’s situation is equally dire, with suggestions pointing shoppers from KZN to take a not insignificant trip to Bethlehem, Ermelo, or Secunda.

“Johannesburg is faring better, for now. There’s a sporadic supply of both Redro and Pecks at stores throughout the city. Your best bet for picking up one of these jars is to browse the Shoprite and Checkers websites and adjusting your local store in the settings”.
