Queen Sono: Netflix’s first African original series renewed for second season

Netflix announced on 28 April that its first African Original series, Queen Sono, has been renewed for a second season. Here’s what we know.

Netflix announced on Instagram that a second season of Queen Sono would be coming our way. We will delve deeper into Queen’s history and complicated love life.

What to expect from Queen Sono’s second season

The 6-part series – starring the acclaimed Pearl Thusi in the title role – was Netflix’s first script-to-screen African Original production; it was released on 28 February 2020.

In the second season, we will see Queen search for the truth as her newfound need for revenge takes her on a mission across Africa. All while she deals with her family’s past and her complicated love life.

Queen Sono season two cast and crew

The fan-favourite cast will return in the second season, including Pearl Thusi, Vuyo Dabula, Sechaba Morojele, Chi Mhende, Loyiso Madinga, Rob Van Vuuren, Kate Liquorish, Khathu Ramabulana and Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa.

Viewers aren’t the only ones excited about Queen Sono’s return. Returning Showrunner and Director Kagiso Lediga said:

“I am so excited by the appetite for African stories and that Netflix is continuing to partner with us to bring to life the next chapter of Queen’s story and showcase it to the world”.

Grit and glamour, strength and vulnerability

Netflix’s Dorothy Ghettuba said the first season of Queen Sono was the beginning of the streaming giant’s journey to introduce the world to exciting African stories. Ghettuba also added:

“It was an unprecedented representation of a strong female black lead in African television. In the first season of Queen Sono, we saw grit and glamour, strength and vulnerability, as well as the past and the present, converge into a powerful narrative that explored the complexities and nuances of the African experience.”

Ghettuba also congratulated Lediga and the Diprente team for delivering a “compelling story that resonated with viewers”, and said the Netflix team “can’t wait to see what they have in store for Queen Sono in this coming season.”

When will the second season be released

Unfortunately, no official confirmation has been received yet. We do know that production on season 2 is expected to begin later this year. Executive Producer, Tamsin Andersson remarked:

“We are thrilled to continue our production of Queen Sono season two with Netflix. The hard work from season one paid off and we’re excited that the brand is investing further in the growth of our local production team.”

Coming to Netflix soon

Netflix will soon also debut another African original, titled Blood & Water. The young adult drama series takes place in Cape Town, South Africa. Stay tuned for the Blood & Water review.
