Remodelling an old kitchen is like a dream come true. It takes pragmatic planning, sensible saving of funds and careful consideration of the best time to start with this exciting transformation.

Breaking out that rusted kitchen sink with constantly dripping taps to replace with a modern sink and ripping out the old worn-out cupboards and replacing them with new finishes are a welcome prospect for any homeowner.

If you have come to this point, you have probably started looking out for a plumber. The question is, have you ensured your plumber is qualified? And not just any qualified plumber, but a Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB) registered plumber? If yes, you are on the road to success!

FAQs with Richard Baille, our PIRB expert

Richard Baille

Richard has been working within the plumbing industry for many years. There are some common questions always coming up when embarking on a kitchen renovation. Instead of browsing the internet for hours in search of answers, we have asked Richard to shed some light.

Also, if you have some questions for Richard, please feel free to comment on this post and we will make sure we ask our expert.

Must I get a qualified plumber?

There is no long answer to this question but only a resounding, “Yes”. Employing the services of a PIRB registered plumber will protect you as a consumer. The trade of plumbing is protected. Anyone that practices plumbing without proper training and certification is guilty of an offence.

It is important to note that if you make use of an unqualified plumber, you as the homeowner will also be held responsible, as this penalty extends to anyone that allows an untrained person to work on their plumbing.

Can’t we just leave the old pipes?

Leaving the old plumbing pipes seems like a less messy route as you do not have to break open walls to replace pipes. However, since these pipes are usually in the wall, one doesn’t know their condition. So, if you do not replace the existing pipes, you may soon start experiencing hitches that will require you to break open the walls after all.

Therefore, when remodelling your kitchen, it is always better to start with a clean slate and use new pipes. That way there is no confusion and blame-shifting.

Can we use the old waste pipes?

Sometimes yes, but often, no. It is important to ensure that the existing waste pipes are in the right place. You also need to confirm that the waste pipes are the correct size and that you do not have to use one waste pipe for multiple points as that may lead to blockages and poor draining. As mentioned in the previous answer, when renovating your kitchen, it is best to start with a clean slate.
