We’ve all experienced that moment when we urgently needed a plumber. And not just any plumber, but a skilled and reliable one, like a PIRB registered plumber. Maybe the toilet started leaking in the middle of the night, or the kitchen sink pipe rusted through, or even worse, the geyser burst and your whole bathroom is under water.

It is in emergency situations like these that the value of a competent plumber cannot be underestimated. Of course, irrespective of an emergency situation, whenever a building project or renovations are undertaken, the value of an experienced plumber can save you time, money and headache in the long run. This is where the Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB) comes in.

Who is PIRB?

PIRB is a trusted professional body regulating the plumbing industry. They are recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority and monitors the competency level of the plumbing industry. PIRB further promotes plumbing practices that protect the environment and the health and safety of consumers. They ensure the application and enforcement of South African National Standards and Codes of Practice.

Why use PIRB registered plumbers?

In terms of the Professional Body for the Plumbing Industry Registration Board,  PIRB licensed plumbers must issue a PIRB Certificate of Compliance (CoC) on all their plumbing works done.  It is further a mandated legal requirement for registered PIRB licensed plumbers to issue a PIRB CoC on any plumbing work done on a geyser, solar water heater or a heat pump according to the Water Services Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as the National Building Regulations.

PIRB serves as a governing body ensuring compliance to technical standards of plumbing work through professional industry plumbing inspectors. PIRB also serves as a platform to which the community can raise complaints in respect of shoddy plumbing work carried out by plumbers.

So, ensuring you use one of PIRB’s registered plumbers, your emergency situation or plumbing project will certainly be a success. And in the unlikely event that something goes wrong, PIRB serves as a platform to which consumers can raise complaints if a PIRB CoC has been issued on the plumbing work undertaken.
