We spend so much time in our kitchens cooking tasty family meals. Oftentimes, the kids sit around the kitchen table engaged in a lively discussion with mum or dad discussing their day’s activities while a meal or snack is being prepared. No wonder it is one of the first rooms in a house to be remodelled when embarking on a renovation spree. We share five brilliant kitchen renovation hacks to bear in mind when remodelling your kitchen.

Renovating your kitchen requires pragmatic planning. Oftentimes, unexpected costs come up. We have chatted to our Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB) expert, Richard Bailie, for the best five kitchen renovation hacks for a smooth and cost-saving kitchen remodelling project.

Selecting your shiny brand new sink

Usually, the sink is the first to be replaced when renovating a kitchen. Selecting a new sink goes along with lots of planning as the dimensions of the new sink will play a role in the layout of your kitchen and plumbing.

If you are only replacing your sink and not moving it, the plumbing may be easier. However, your new sink may require an adjustment to the arrangement and height of the plumbing.

The best spot for your dishwasher

Dishwashers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Ideally your dishwasher should be stationed close to the sink so that the same water supply and main drainage pipe can be used. The dishwasher will also need a power supply. If your dishwasher cannot be placed close to the kitchen’s main sink, you will need the assistance of an expert plumber.

Need water for your refrigerator and freezer?

Many of the latest refrigerator models require access to a water supply to provide chilled water and ice. If you are planning to replace your old fridge to one of these snazzy new models, make sure to let your plumber know exactly where your fridge will be located in your kitchen so that it can be taken into consideration when planning the plumbing.

Cost-effective energy-saving and water-saving appliances

Just because a faucet or other plumbing appliance looks fashionable does not mean it is of a high quality.  The difference between a superior quality mixer and a cheap alternative may not be immediately apparent. The real proof of the pudding is in the eating in this case. Quality mixers, taps, sinks, and other fixtures will last and perform as expected. Cheap ones will start to deteriorate and leak.

One other thing that quality tapware has in common is very long warranties and excellent customer service should anything go wrong.

Isolate the water supply to the kitchen

Accidents can happen at any time. If you have a kitchen pipe leak, or your dishwasher starts leaking or worse even, your kitchen geyser burst, you can isolate the water supply to the kitchen with a stop tap. That way, the rest of your house will still have water while the plumbing issue in your kitchen can be resolved.
