If you are renovating your garage into a man cave, there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to the ergonomics of it all.

Renovating your garage man cave | Ergonomics

Deborah Quilter writes that if you’ve ever had a backache from bending over a counter or stumbled due to poor lighting, it might be time to consider ergonomics, especially in a place such as a man cave that is there for pure relaxation.

She says that ergonomics is the science of fitting the task to you so you don’t strain your body to accomplish a job – or by taking a time-out in your man cave – and it’s easier and cheaper to build in ergonomics from the start than retrofitting after the fact.

Richard Bailie, our expert from the Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB), shared his best tips when it comes to renovating your garage into a possible man cave. He also alluded to basic ergonomic rules that you can focus on when getting started on this renovation:

Height Matters

Get the height right when it comes to counters or a sink. If you plan on installing this into your man cave, this is very important. You should not have to bend over or raise your shoulders to use a counter or sink.

Supportive Furniture

If you want to add some chairs for relaxation purposes in your man cave, make sure to get chairs that support your back. Richard says that it is also important to furnish your mantuary with what you are comfortable with, even if it is out of the ordinary.

“There is something to be said for uniqueness, no matter how quirky,” he explains. “Often when our defences are lowered, and we allow ourselves to become a little vulnerable, creative juices start to flow and we can end up with objects, trinkets and even furniture that no one else gets. But that’s ok because it feeds the soul.”

Lighting could make or break a space

It is said that mood lighting usually works for romantic restaurants but presents ergonomic hazards at home. Therefore, make sure that you get the perfect lighting in order to not strain your eyes.

“Installing the correct lighting could make or break a space. Lighting is one of those things that if done correctly, becomes more than the sum of its parts.”

It is important to get the plumbing right

Of course, there are instances when it is crucial to get in touch with a plumber when doing any renovation in your home. This is especially true if there is water (or at least some kind of liquid) involved. Richard alludes to a water feature, a keg, guest toilet or a wet bar for your man cave.

In this case, it is very important to contact a PIRB registered plumber to help you get it right from the start.
