The big day has arrived, and finally, that much-anticipated bathroom renovation is taking shape. Slowly, your bathroom is being transformed into a little tranquillity corner where you can soak off the stress of the day.

At this stage, it is vital to ask yourself if you have started your bathroom project the right way? In other words, have you embarked on your bathroom renovation with a Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB) registered plumber? If you have, you can have peace of mind that your bathroom project is in safe hands. If you have not, it is not too late to make the necessary adjustments.

Let’s hear from our PIRB Expert, Richard Baille

Richard Baille

Richard has been working within the plumbing industry for many years and provided some great insight into the plumbing industry here.  In this article, Richard will share some helpful plumbing tips and hacks for a successful bathroom renovation.

Richard points out 4 common plumbing tips and mistakes when renovating a bathroom

A successful bathroom renovation is not only determined by what goes on inside the bathroom but also outside. The way a plumber connects to existing services can oftentimes be a deal-breaker.

Firstly, a plumber must always conduct a thorough assessment to ascertain which services are available, for example, if sewer, cold water and hot water connections are available and whether these existing services could be utilised whilst still adhering to the SANS standards for installation.

This is where the following common mistakes usually creep in, especially if you are making use of an unregistered plumber:

  • Joining of waste pipes before connecting them into a sewer stack due to lack of space.
  • Failure to install proper venting on the sewer and waste pipes.
  • Connecting to water supplies that were not designed to cater for the additional demands of the renovation.
  • Utilising existing hot water sources that are unable to cope with the additional demands (for example, undersized geysers and/or pipes).

From the above list, it is clear that using a PIRB registered plumber can save you much frustration in the long run as many of these issues will not necessarily be picked up immediately after the renovation has been done but only surface a bit later.

Richard explains why it is important to use a PIRB registered plumber

  • PIRB is a governing body ensuring that all plumbing work carried out by its members complies with the level of expertise required by professional and registered plumbers.
  • PIRB registered plumbers are legally required to issue a PIRB Certificate of Compliance (CoC) on any plumbing work done on a geyser, solar water heater or heat pump. It is further considered good practice for PIRB registered plumbers to provide a PIRB Certificate of Compliance (CoC) on any other plumbing works carried out.
  • PIRB further serves as a body to which consumers can raise complaints if a PIRB registered plumber provided sub-standard services.
  • Consumers can rest assured that PIRB registered plumbers are up to date with the latest plumbing expertise as they are required to upskill every year to achieve CPD points to remain registered.
