For many people, a tin of pilchards was a cheaper alternative to buying meat for the family. This is why the new price of the family-favourite tinned fish has shocked many South Africans who are starting to truly feel the impact of the ever-rising cost of living.

Many South Africans have expressed dismay over the fact that they may no longer be able to afford what used to be one of the most affordable meals for their families.

The new price of pilchards stuns Mzansi

Years ago, many local families relied on low costing tinned fish to have a well-priced hearty meal in the evenings.

Many families are looking at those days from their rear view mirror as the once cheap meal option has now become too expensive.

Taking to Twitter, a South African Twitter user with the handle @agapetemple shared a snap of a famous brand of canned pilchards which now costs R25.

He captioned the post:

“Hayi Nina, sifike nini ku R24 (hey guys! How did we get to R24).”

Mzansi chirps in

The post received over 2000 reactions from Twitter users who are equally as shocked at the direction things are taking for many people who are already struggling to get by.
