PETROL SAVING ‘TIP’ GOES VIRAL

With yet another petrol price increase last week – and talk that it may very well reach the unprecedented level of R40 per litre – South Africans on social media have been left grasping at straws.

Following last month’s petrol-pill fiasco, another “fuel-saving trick” has gone viral. And this one involves pouring carbonated drinks into your tank.

A pop-up advert showing a man pouring a buddy bottle of Coke into his tank with the words “Simple trick to lower car fuel consumption by 55%” is fast gaining momentum.

The advert has been spotted on Twitter and Reddit and has intrigued many Netizens. But the advert has led to a page advertising a product called EcoPlus. The product claims to be “a chip tuning box” that can “reduce fuel consumption”.

According to Snopes, EcoPlus has distanced itself from the advert, citing: “the ad is not ours. And Coca-Cola is not related to our product”.

DRIVER TRIES ‘HACK’ – SEE WHAT HAPPENS…

Whilst the advert on saving petrol by using Coke as an alternative has proved to be just clickbait, one YouTuber took it a step further by wanting to “test” the theory.

In a video titled: “What happens when you fill up a car with CocaCola?” – the Youtuber does exactly that.

In a video with over 12 million views, the man pours a bottle of Coke into the tank of his BMW. “Today I decided to kill a car”, he shared in the description box.

Needless to say, a few minutes after driving, the vlogger reports hearing a “strange noise” which comes from the engine. “It’s like bubbling or something”, he says to the camera.

THE DANGERS OF SUBSTITUTING PETROL WITH COKE

Meanwhile, one mechanic is warning of the dangers of pouring anything but petrol into your tank.

Mahommed Raza, of Raza Auto in Midrand, told IOL: “Your car is supposed to have fuel in the tank; that fuel will run to your engine, that’s how it performs. However, if you put a foreign substance into the tank, it will go to the motor.

“It will then seize up the injectors and create a sticky blockage that will damage them, as well as the fuel pump, and a lot more parts”.

Carscoop added: “From what we have learned over the years, Coca-Cola is great for giving your tires a nice shine. It can also be used to clean rust off various metals.

However, the publication continued: “Be it the classic recipe or the diet version, Coca-Cola, as other soft drinks, cannot be used as a substitute for gasoline [petrol] or diesel”.
