In response to the recent civil unrest that gripped parts of South Africa, OUTsurance has joined the #RebuildSA movement by donating more than 60 tons of food to riot-stricken areas in KwaZulu-Natal, while helping orchestrate clean-up operations across Gauteng. The project is valued at over R2.5 million, combining staff contributions and company funds.

Several trucks collected food supplies and essentials from a Shoprite warehouse in Midrand early Tuesday morning, for delivery to a designated distribution centre in Durban. By the following morning, a team of OUTsurance staff were unloading the precious cargo and making up parcels for distribution to affected areas in the province.

Back in Gauteng, in partnership with Traffic Free Flow, a 62-strong team of OUTsurance Pointsment were finishing up their three-day-long clean-up operation in affected areas of Alexandra, Ivory Park, Johannesburg CBD, Thembisa and Soweto.

“This is a time where we have to join hands and help wherever we can”, says OUTsurance CEO, Danie Matthee. “We’d like to thank Traffic Free Flow for helping coordinate the logistics and roll-out of the clean-up programme in Gauteng. And, of course, our retail and transport partners who made the invaluable food supplies and trucks available to us at very short notice. It’s been a devastating time for many of our fellow citizens, but I’m encouraged to see how the South African spirit conquers in times of need.”

The overall operation falls under OUTsurance’s Staff Helping SA OUT banner – a corporate social investment programme that gets OUTsurance staff on the ground, helping out wherever they can in communities across South Africa. Staff also have the option to make monetary donations, which are matched by the business.

“We’re proud of the work we do through Staff Helping SA OUT,” continued Matthee. “We’re always looking for ways to uplift those in need and create social change. The best part is our staff’s willingness to get involved and, in many cases, lead the activities. OUTsurance is a special place to work and is full of exceptionally caring people.”
