One out of three millennials doesn’t identify as either straight or gay

In a new survey of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29, one out of every three participants would not label themselves as completely heterosexual of homosexual.

The study, conducted by YouGov, asked millennials to rate themselves based on Alfred Kinsey’s famous Kinsey Scale, used for measuring one’s sexuality.

Elite Daily reports that participants were given one simple instruction: Please try to place your sexuality on a scale of 0 to 6, where 0 is completely heterosexual and 6 is completely homosexual.

Of all those involved in the survey, 66% defined themselves as completely heterosexual or, on the other end, completely homosexual. Of that 66%, 64% labelled themselves a 0 – completely heterosexual – and the other 2% labelled themselves a 6 – completely homosexual –; the rest were somewhere in-between 0 and 6.

Interestingly, the study found that older groups were more likely to label themselves as either completely hetero or completely homosexual, while the young ones prefer to meander somewhere in the middle.

Another interesting thing to note is how, of the folks who labelled themselves as completely ‘straight’, the survey shows that 89% of them would not rule out the possibility of being attracted to the same sex.

A similar study in the United Kingdom found that of all the people surveyed, almost 50% of those under the age of 25 refused to be categorised as either heterosexual or homosexual.
