MALAIKA’S IMPACT ON THE SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC INDUSTRY

Tshedi Mholo, Bongani Nchang and Jabulani Ndaba all got together to form the award-winning pop group Malaika. The group took South Africa by storm with their consistent music releases and heartwarming lyrics.

Their 2004 hit Destiny topped the radio charts and the song is a timeless hit that South Africans still listen to today.

Jabulani Ndaba passed away in 2008 from tuberculosis and Tshedi Mholo and Bongani Nchang continued performing until the group split up. According to Mholo, things changed between her and Nchang after Ndaba’s passing.

“I think we had the same vision, but just didn’t agree on ways to achieve that vision,” Mholo told TshisaLive in 2016.

TSHEDI MHOLO TAKES HER ‘DESTINY’ TO THE NEXT PHASE

2022 would’ve marked 20 years since Malaika entered the music industry. On the back of this, Tshedi Mholo took to Instagram to formally announce her departure from Malaika.

In the statement, Mholo mentioned that her decision to leave Malaika was not easy and was born out of positivity with no animosity involved.

“The truth that I have for many years kept out of public eye, newsfeeds and social media timelines for sake of the brand, is that, especially recently, being in the band really took a toll on me on so many levels and I have reached a stage where I cannot carry the burden any further.”

“Although we have previously gone separate ways and later rekindled as a brand this time the decision is as a result of thorough consideration and consultation with key role players in my life and one that I do not intend to backtrack on.”
