‘Montero’ high: Lil Nas X took magic mushrooms for album inspiration

American rapper Lil Nas X shared that using psychedelic mushrooms for the first time while putting together his debut album, ‘Montero’, allowed him to ‘open up’.

Working on new music is often a difficult process for musicians so everyone needs something to help them release the tension. American musician Lil Nas X shared that a pivotal moment of making his debut album Montero was trying psychedelic mushrooms or “shrooms” for the first time. He mentioned that he was able to open up while making the music.

LIL NAS X’S FIRST ‘SHROOM’ TRIP

Lil Nas X was featured in the Wall Street Journal’s Innovators issue. The 22-year-old musician revealed that he loved trying shrooms for the first time and had his two close friends and most trusted producers Denzel Baptise and David Biral popularly known as Take a Daytrip by his side. 

While on the shroom trip, the rapper took occasional dips in the pool and hot tub and simply reflected on life. He mentioned that the psychedelics allowed him to navigate through lingering feelings of self-consciousness. 

“I was able to open up a lot. I was able to write actual stories about my life and put it into my music. I actually did that for the first time.”

The star worked on the album during the pandemic at several Airbnbs in Los Angeles, California. 

BILLY PORTER AND JACK HARLOW PRAISE LIL NAS X 

Several musicians have praised the rapper for his ability to turn heads in the music industry. Oscar award-winning actor Billy Porter who was in Lil Nas X’s That’s What I Want, music video said: “The fact that Lil Nas X can be black and queer and out and in your face is something that we’ve been fighting for, for my entire life.”

“To have lived long enough to see the day where there is someone like him in the marketplace is astonishing.”

Rapper Jack Harlow, who is featured on Industry Baby says the star musician makes him want to push boundaries. “He makes me not want to play it safe.”

ANNUAL INNOVATOR AWARDS

Apart from being featured in Wall Street Journal’s Innovators issue, the multi-talented star was honoured at the 11th annual Innovator Awards held on Monday 1 November at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. 

Other stars who were honoured at the event include British racing driver Lewis Hamilton, artist Maya Lin, Ryan Reynolds, Kim Kardashian West and the creators behind Sesame Street. 

Lil Nas X kept it simple but fashionable for the event. He wore a white cropped button-up with a black coat and skirt by Thom Browne. He paired the look with Rick Owens chunky boots and carried a doggy handbag.
