Lebo M bags composer gig for upcoming Hollywood film ‘The Woman King’

South African composer and producer Lebohang Morake otherwise known as Lebo M has bagged a gig as the music composer for the upcoming Hollywood film The Woman King starring Oscar award-winning actress Viola Davis and South Africa’s star actress Thuso Mbedu.

‘THE WOMAN KING’

According to Deadline, The Woman King is based on an original screenplay by American screenwriter Dana Stevens. The film is described as a “historical epic” that was inspired by the events of The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of Africa’s most powerful states in the 18th and 19th centuries. 

The Woman King will follow an all-female military unit, specifically its leader Nanisca played by How To Get Away With Murder actress Viola Davis. 

The upcoming film is set to be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood who is known for her exceptional work on The Old Guard in 2020.

The cast will feature the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Jayme Lawson, Hero Fiennes Tiffan and South African actors Thuso Mbedu, Seputla Sebogodi and Masali Baduza. 

Other stars who are set to star in the movie are Grammy award-winning musician Angelique Kido, Thando Dlomo.

LEBO M TO COMPOSE FIVE SONGS FOR ‘THE WOMAN KING’

Successful composer Lebo M confirmed on Monday 22 November that he will be composing music for the upcoming film. 

He shared his excitement sharing that he will be composing five songs for the film.

“The five songs have been crafted with precision and due consideration of the immense historical significance that the movie brings, but it also represents the prowess of local talent,” he told Sowetan.

“Being part of this unrivalled ensemble cast is an honour and a privilege, allowing us to produce music that will not only elevate the rising phenoms in the movie but also affirms our culture and traditions through the telling of this story.”

The Woman King is set to be released on 16 September 2022.

LEBO M’S MUSICAL JOURNEY

Lebo M was handpicked by German composer Hans Zimmer to work with him on The Lion King soundtrack. 

The South African composer sings the first few bars of Nants’ Ingonyama, the opening track on The Lion King film. The song has been covered by several artists around the world and is one of the most popular sounds from film. 

Lebo M also assisted in piecing together The Lion King: The Gift album with Grammy award-winning star Beyoncé.
