‘We want loyalty’: iFani says these three artists aren’t ‘welcome’ to hip-hop

‘We don’t want Snova, Nyovest or Madumane’: SA rapper iFani says these three artists are not ‘welcome’ in hip-hop when the genre ‘takes over’ amapiano.

The amapiano genre has grown exponentially in the past year and has seen the rise of several young artists. The success of the genre has also seen some South African artists take risks and release amapiano songs with popular producers. Local rapper iFani took to Twitter to express that as soon as SA hip-hop “takes over” amapiano, the genre will not welcome Snova, Cassper Nyovest or DJ Maphorisa.

IFANI WANTS TO PUT HIP-HOP BACK ‘ON TOP’

Local artists and music lovers have been debating whether amapiano has successfully overtaken hip-hop as the biggest genre in South Africa. This is due to most amapiano artists collaborating with international artists, sharing amapiano with Africa and the world.

Commenting on the amapiano vs hip-hop debate on Twitter, rapper iFani says he’ll be bringing hip-hop “back on top”. 

“Thank you for your amapiano… I’ll be bringing hip-hop back on top. Starting this weekend, we taking over,” he wrote. 

IFANI SAYS HIP-HOP NEEDS LOYALTY

Taking to Twitter on Friday 19 November, the 36-year-old rapper said when hip-hop “takes over amapiano”, there are three artists that won’t be welcomed to hip-hop. He mentioned Vusi Nova aka Snova who made his amapiano debut with Shuku Shuku on 19 November.

The rapper also mentioned DJ Maphorisa aka Madumane and Cassper Nyovest who started his career as a hip-hop artists but ventured into other genres.

TWITTER REACTS 

Mzansi tweeps did not take well to iFani’s tweet and clapped back at the Ayadelela rapper with some questioning his rise in South African hip-hop.

One tweep wrote: “iFani you shouldn’t even be saying anything.” 

Another wrote: “You’re always worried about the wrong things.”

“Haven’t you been an upcoming artist for the past decade?”
