Teaching in the UK with Teaching Personnel

As a South African teacher in the UK, where do I start?

If you’re a South African teacher living in the UK you’ve probably noticed the Department of Education calling for more people to consider a career in teaching. There’s a teacher shortage and the media reports that several schools are now looking overseas to fill positions.

As a South African in London specialising in Education Recruitment, I often get asked by South African qualified teachers where to start when it comes to finding work in UK schools. Prior to 2012, South African teachers were automatically awarded UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and things seemed a lot simpler.

The good news is South African teachers can continue to work in maintained schools in England without QTS for up to four years. You can take on a long term teaching position or work on daily supply through Teaching Personnel. Both options will give you the experience and confidence needed to apply for the Assessment Only (AO) route to QTS – which means you will be able to continue teaching after four years.

I’ve had recent success placing South African qualified teachers into schools across London and the feedback from both schools and teachers alike is excellent. “Teaching Personnel assisted me in finding daily supply work in lots of different schools local to where I live. Once I was ready to settle into something more long term they found the perfect role for me in a fabulous local school and they still consistently provided me with the greatest level of support.” –Sarah, Supply Teacher.

Yes, the weather here is questionable; as is the price of biltong, but if you find the right school then teaching in London can be a rewarding career!

If you’ve been out of teaching for a while or don’t have the relevant qualifications, you could work as a Teaching Assistant supporting the class teacher. Schools are constantly looking for positive behaviour mentors, physical education support or just an extra pair of hands to support pupil progress.

By registering with Teaching Personnel you will have a dedicated recruitment consultant finding you work.  You will also have access to much sought-after continuous professional development courses to help you succeed.

Register with us today on our website and your local consultant will be in touch with all the information you need to find a suitable school placement.
