SA’s Quartet of Peace organise

The Quartet of Peace is the name given to a small ensemble representing South Africa’s four Nobel Peace Laureates: Desmond Tutu, Albert Luthuli, FW de Klerk, and Nelson Mandela. Created by master craftsman Brian Lisus, the group consists of two violins, a viola and a cello – with each instrument symbolising one of the statesmen.

The vision for the Quartet is to promote the ideals symbolised by the lives of these great men, using the power of music to inspire, educate, and uplift. Alexander Baillie, Max Baillie, Joel Sandelson and the Barbican Chamber Orchestra will give a special concert supporting the Quartet of Peace.

The Quartet of Peace instruments will be joined by the Barbican Chamber Orchestra, led by the exciting young conductor Joel Sandelson, for a very special concert at St Peter’s Church, 90 Kensington Park Rd in Notting Hill from 7pm to 8:30pm on 17 September. Musicians Alexander Baillie and Max Baillie will perform on the Quartet of Peace instruments, and at least one of the project’s bursars will also participate.

While promoting peace and inspiring audiences around the world, the project seeks to enhance the opportunities open to young South Africans talented in string-playing or instrument-making/repairing, who would otherwise not be financially able to advance their studies. The project is overseen by two registered charities: in South Africa, The South African Peace Quartet Trust, and in Britain, the UK Friends of the South African Peace Quartet Trust.
