South Africans and other migrants will be eligible for the vaccine, whether or not they have the right to live in the UK. Even overstayers and those illegally in the UK will be eligible. The UK Government has confirmed that persons getting a vaccine will not trigger any immigration checks.

The UK Government further confirmed that the vaccine would be free for everyone in the UK.

Migrants, including those illegally in the UK, will be encouraged to register with a local general practitioner. Registering will ensure that all migrants can make sure that they get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible in the vaccination rollout.

The Government will contact persons registered with a General Practitioner at the earliest opportunity. However, the Government will also work with other partners, and external organisations to reach persons not registered with a GP. This step will ensure everyone gets the chance to get vaccinated.

The UK Government will not prioritise vaccinations for migrants or refugees but will focus on reaching the elderly and most vulnerable persons first.

National Health Charges and Covid-19

During 2020, the UK Government passed regulations that added Covid-19 to the list of diseases for which there is no charge for NHS treatment. This concession is irrespective of a person’s immigration status.

Short-term visitors in the UK and those without lawful status can thus use the NHS for Covid-19 treatment without charge. Even in cases where a person has to take a Coivd-19 test, and it is negative, there will be no NHS charge.

Vaccinations will now be included in this concession.
