Sweetie Pie – that sweet taste of home

When you’re far from home there are times when the only thing that will ease your homesickness is a sweet taste from home. But when you can’t get hold of your favourite treat, you can go for the next best thing!

Being in a new country is the perfect opportunity to discover some new foods and fabulous flavours so here are some UK equivalents to our South African favourites.

Wilson Toffees – Black Jacks
While not entirely the same, Black Jacks are similar to our classic Wilson’s Toffees. Both are tough yet full of flavour and they will turn your mouth black!

Sweetie Pies – Tea Cakes
I’m not sure how these got their name here in the UK but if you are after a Sweetie Pie, look for Teacakes (normally in the biscuit aisle) and they are pretty darn close!

PS I Love You – Caramac
The Caramac might just be plain chocolate, compared to the wafer filling of the PS bar, but if it’s that caramel chocolate taste you’re after, pick up a Caramac. But be warned they are addictive!

Sparkles – Foxs Fruits
A childhood favourite, Sparkles came in all sorts of fruity flavours, just like the yummy Fox’s Fruits.

Home Made Fudge – Scottish Tablet
No tuisnywerhuid shop was complete without homemade fudge. And while you can get fudge in the UK, try tracking down some traditional Scottish tablet – it’s amazing!

Whispers – Maltesers
Remember getting a box of Whispers when you went to the movies? The UK equivalent of these is Maltesers but Whispers were still the best!

Bar One –Mars Bar
Everywhere else in the world seems to have a Mars Bar, but we had Bar Ones (for a 25 hour day!).

Prawn Cocktail Crisps – Skips
These chips were the envy of everyone when you had them in your lunchbox. Despite the weird smell and taste they were pretty popular! And you can get them in the UK too – just look for Skips in the crisps aisle in your local supermarket.
