10 things all South Africans l

No matter where you live in the world, or how long you’ve been away, there’s always something magical about coming back to the place of your birth.

Here are 10 things that all South Africans love about coming home.

1. Visiting your favourite restaurant

Camps Bay

Nando’s might be global these days but there are so many other South African restaurants that people miss. So much so that often your first stop is normally somewhere food related! Whether it’s a national chain like Ocean Basket or an intimate favourite like Fat Cactus, food holds memories for everyone.

2. Immersing yourself in nature

From major landmarks like Table Mountain and the Drakensberg to just going for a walk along the beach, South Africa has so much natural beauty that is hard to beat.

3. Seeing proper blue skies

The sky really is a different shade of blue in South Africa.

4. Lazing about on gorgeous beaches

From Langebaan and Clifton 4th beach to Jeffrey’s Bay, Umhlanga and St Lucia, we have some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world.

5. Enjoying the finest local wines

Cape Winelands

Local South African wines are now imported all over the world, but when you’re back in South Africa, the prices make them even more attractive! Most bottles cost less than you’d pay for a glass in other countries!

6. Having a real South African braai

You might have braais all over the world, but a braai in your own backyard surrounded by friends and family just can’t be beaten.

7. Seeing the Big 5 in the wild

Big 5

Ask any South African what they miss most about South Africa (after family and friends of course), and it’s normally the bush and the animals. There are so few places to see animals in the wild and we’re so proud of having these wonders right in our backyard. Most people manage to squeeze in a few days in the bush on their trips home.

8. Not having to change your words

flag wave

Robots, packets, howzit, pants, lekker, slap chips, kak, bakkie – no need to translate when you’re back home!

9. Being able to pay for everyone’s meal

rands

When going out for dinner with friends or family, the bill often comes to less than what you might pay for one person in your new country so often you’re happy to pick up the bill for a change!

10. Going on a proper road trip

Road trips are something everyone does in South Africa. Whether it’s the Garden Route, Joburg to Cape Town or the popular Joburg to Durban route, most people have gone on at least one of these. You can drive for 24 hours and still be in the same country – now that’s a proper road trip!
