Moving can be daunting. Being organised can help with some of the pressure you may feel once you have made the decision to move.
We spoke to the emigration experts at Grant Kaplan and Associates to find out if there are things that can be done (or avoided) to ensure a smoother transition abroad.
Don’t forget to ensure that passports and visas are all up-to-date and ready. Make sure you have currency organised and that your driver’s licence is valid in the country to which you’re moving. These are small items, but absolutely essential.
It may skip your mind to tie up certain loose ends as you approach your departure date. These include cancelling subscriptions such as Spotify, your internet and phone lines, your gym subscription and certain insurance policies.
Notify your municipality of your departure so that you don’t receive unexpected bills for water or electricity. Ask a family member to handle any payments that may need to be sorted out once you have left.
Make sure you have somewhere to stay once you touch down. You will not want to be organising accommodation at the last minute. If you’re not certain of the area you’d like to rent in, make use of a service like Airbnb and get short-term accommodation until you have decided where to put down roots.
When emigrating, certain visas require certain levels of insurance. Make sure you know which insurance you should have depending on your visa, and sort this out before you depart, or as close to arrival as possible.
If you require medicine, make sure you have enough to see you through the first month or two after your arrival.
Familiarise yourself with certain customs and expressions to avoid confusion once you land. Also, decide how you will be transported from the airport and ensure you have the money, apps or information to facilitate this easily.
