The MAC was commissioned by the UK Government to consider what medium-skill occupations to include in the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) ahead of the changes being made to the points-based immigration system on 1 January 2021. The MAC released a report on 29 September 2020, in which it advises the UK Government to add several occupations to the SOL. Recommendations by the MAC The MAC recommended that senior care workers and nursing assistants be added to the SOL. This will relieve pressure on the system when free movement ends at the end of 2020. They also advised that occupations such as butchers, bricklayers, and welders should be included on the UK-wide list. Separate Shortage Occupation Lists The MAC further recommended additions to separate lists for all of the devolved nations. Such separate lists will then allow for additional flexibility and reflecting the different needs of each. The list for Northern Ireland would include fishmongers, bakers, and horticultural workers. The list for Scotland would include childminders and nursery nurses. The list for Wales should include health professionals. The MAC further said that a minor review of all the lists should take place once a year, and a major review every three years. Comments from Breytenbachs on the report by the MAC Breytenbachs is delighted to take note of the proposals by the MAC. If the proposals are accepted, it will bring about many opportunities for migrants looking to live and work in the UK, who would otherwise not have been able to qualify.
