Earlier this year, Breytenbachs reported to readers that the UK Government was planning to increase the IHS from 1 October 2020, subject to Parliamentary approval. Fortunately, the Immigration Health Charge Amendment Order 2020, was only made on 6 October 2020. The amendment order comes into force 21 days later. Subsequently, the IHS charge will only increase on 27 October 2020.

Persons who still wish to submit their UK Visa applications before the increase takes place, have to make sure that they submit by 26 October 2020.

New Immigration Health Surcharge Fees

From 27 October 2020, the Immigration Health Surcharge fees will be as follows;

  • Adults will pay £624 per applicant per year
  • Students and persons applying for the Youth Mobility Scheme will pay £470 per applicant per year.
  • Children under the age of 18 years old will pay £470 per child per year.

Persons exempted from paying the Immigration Health Surcharge

It is important to note that the IHS is only payable by persons who are applying for UK visas for periods longer than six months.  Applicants for visitor visas are thus exempt.

There are also some other exemptions. Applicants for Indefinite Leave to Remain and British citizenship does not pay the IHS.

Persons applying for the new Health and Care visa will be exempt from paying the IHS.

There are also certain specific exemptions such as dependents of members of Her Majesty’s Forces, and the concession known as the ‘destitute domestic violence concession.’

Please speak to your Breytenbachs consultant for more information about exemptions.
