Moving abroad is not for the faint of heart. We’ve compiled a list of dos and don’ts from a panel of moving experts.
Use these tips as a guideline to help you get the most out of your move.
1. Size matters
Movers typically charge according to the volume of the shipment. Place clothes, bedding, cushions and other soft furnishings into a bin bag or a vacuum bag, squeeze the air out of the bag and tie a knot. This’ll save space and ultimately money as the volume of your goods is reduced. Movers can be asked to fill drawers and appliances with soft furnishings to reduce the volume too.
2. Size really matters
Don’t pack it, flog it! Lugging your hand-me-down furniture is not always the most cost-effective way of moving. Consider selling or donating furniture you don’t absolutely love and buying new when you reach your destination. Really consider if it’s worth your while transporting large items like beds and couches.
3. Pack it yourself
In order to save time on the day of your move, most moving companies will provide you with boxes before your move. Take advantage of this service and start packing ahead of time, on your own, to save money on packing fees. Bear in mind that anything you pack yourself won’t be covered by packing insurance, so pack the hardy items yourself, and leave the expensive items to the professionals.
4. Wrap it up
Make use of towels and bedding to protect glassware or mirrors. Pack perfume, and even wine glasses, into sports socks. It’s the whole two-birds-one-stone theory.
5. Insure selectively
Remembering that you can’t claim from insurance if anything you pack yourself breaks, don’t insure everything. Be selective and insure breakables and valuable items only.
6. Throw a party
Food and booze can’t go with you, so you might as well consume it with friends before you go. If you’re cheeky, you could even double up your farewell party with a ‘help us pack’ party. That’ll be the beginning of sifting the friends who will really miss you from the ones who, well, won’t.
