Newly appointed Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has demanded that all Springbok Tests be aired on the public broadcaster SABC’s platforms.

This comes after an urgent court interdiction forced the public broadcaster to pull the plug on its promise to screen the two Tests between South Africa and Ireland on 6 and 13 July.

McKenzie was one of many high-profile supporters at the game at Loftus last weekend which the Springboks won 27-20.

Just hours before the match on Saturday, the SABC announced it would no longer be broadcasting either of the Test matches between the countries.

A week ago, the broadcaster announced that it had reached a deal with the pay-TV channel SuperSport to televise both games on SABC 2, delayed at 20:30 that same evening.

However, at the eleventh hour, an urgent court action put paid to that plan.

It said in a statement: “This decision follows the recent urgent litigation at the Competition Appeal Court over the broadcast rights to the test matches, which necessitated the SABC to review its decision to continue with the sub-license agreement concluded with Multichoice.”

GAYTON MCKENZIE: ‘THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE’

Meanwhile, Gayton McKenzie has criticised broadcasters for not making the SA rugby teams’ matches more accessible to the public.

The Minister of Sport tweeted: “I enjoyed yesterday’s game but felt anger, disappointment & sadness that so many South Africans could not watch.

“We need them to share the Springbok joy. We can’t say we are a pro-poor country, but don’t have the Boks on SABC. This needs to change. It MUST change. It’s going to change.”

Many X users agreed.

@MuziBucs: “Make it a policy, make it a mandate that all national teams must be on National broadcaster.”

@dirkwinterbach: “This will be the best decision the government can make. End this DSTV monopoly game they are playing.”

@lukiedebeer: “And also, Chasing The Sun 1 & 2 have to be seen by all South Africans”.
