In recent years, there’s been a huge movement to get rid of plastic. While it is a bit of a miracle material, it’s also harmful.

A report from The Independent last year claimed that there are 500 times more pieces of microplastic in the sea than there are stars in our galaxy and by 2050 it is estimated there will be more plastic than fish.

Plastic is not recycled nearly enough and the bulk of the stuff goes into landfill.

And we use a lot of it. For everything. It’s only once you stop to think about it that you realise how much of the stuff we use.

So, restaurants are increasingly becoming more environmentally aware. Many are getting rid of straws and replacing their take away containers with biodegradable options.

MassimosHB, a restaurant in Hout Bay, is one such restaurant. In a Facebook post, they shared what they have done and how they want their customers to help them get rid of the final plastic obstacle.

One of Massimo’s 2018 resolutions is to use less plastic. We have managed to get rid of plastic straws, plastic bottles and non-biodegradable take away containers.

The only one we can’t find a substitute for (because of the oil leaking) are the chopped chili and garlic containers.

So here is the deal: next time you order a TAKE AWAY we will not charge you for the extra chili or garlic IF you have it straight on the pizza OR if you bring with you your own little jar and we give you a couple of spoonfuls.

It might be a little thing, but it has to start from each of us

Amazing! Wouldn’t it be great if all restaurants (and all of us at home) opted for this approach so that we can all go plastic free?
