‘We commend her beautiful soul’: Tributes have poured in for arts luminary and ambassador Lindiwe Mabuza who passed on at age 83.

On Monday 6 November this year, arts luminary and ambassador Lindiwe Mabuza passed away at age 83. Since then tributes have been pouring in for the struggle icon and esteemed poet. uMkhonto we Sizwe veteran Mavuso Msimang is one of many who have shared kind messages about Mabuza.

Kind messages pour in as South Africa mourns the loss of Lindiwe Mabuza

uMkhonto we Sizwe veteran Mavuso Msimang just paid tribute to Lindiwe Mabuza. In a heartfelt message, Msimang describes Mabuza as a great poet and driver for hope and resilience, especially during apartheid.

“She was very strong on women’s issues you could swear that she was a feminist. Lindi loved art and collected a lot of it all over the world. I met a number of people through her.

“She was a loving person who was loved by people. Since her passing, I have received messages of condolences from all over the world, especially Sweden.”

Mabuza’s family announced her passing in a statement that revealed that she passed away in the afternoon yesterday.

‘We commend her beautiful soul’

“The family is grateful for all your prayers and outpouring of love during these past weeks while she has been receiving palliative care at home, where she wanted to be.

“We commend her beautiful soul to the heavens and we ask the Almighty Father to receive her soul into eternity. In light of the Level 1 Restrictions and the stringent Covid-19 protocols, the family asks at this time that they be afforded the opportunity to make the necessary arrangements.”

Mabuza who was born in New Castle in KwaZulu-Natal, published five volumes of poems, a children’s book, and also co-edited Oliver Tambo Remembered.

She was also a journalist for the ANC’s Radio Freedom, The Sowetan reports. She is survived by her daughter and grandchildren.
