Adel Muller in Pretoria: Youngster ‘flattens the curve’ with martial arts gusto

A nine-year-old boy from Pretoria is determined to flatten the curve by staying active in his sport – and he is even getting his grandmother to participate.

My nine-year-old boy, Joshua, from Northern Pretoria is practising his sport five days a week doing Taekwondo ATA at the Agoge Club.

He is sponsored by his uncle and started the sport at the beginning of 2019.

He practises five days a week and takes part in regional and national competitions. He has achieved several many gold and silver medals and received Tshwane North colours and was under the top five at the South African finals achieving third place in the traditional form category.

Currently he is on his fifth belt (green belt) and is now on the club’s leadership programme.

#lockdownlife discipline

However, being an active sports boy, it’s challenging keeping him busy during the lockdown and having ADHD also adds to how good the sport is for any child with any kind of disability. He is so disciplined that no matter how hard it rains or how hot the day gets, he does not miss a practice.

This sport has changed his life in many ways. It is giving him self-esteem, respect and discipline.

At least during this lockdown period he has the privilege of a yard to still do exercise and practise his Taekwondo. He even had his grandmother of 74 and sister practising with him.

Lockdown has shown us the things that matters in life! It’s truly worth to try and help to “flatten the curve”.

Here Joshua demonstrates how he is ‘flattening the curve’:
