Kwesta: Hip-hop heavyweight ends year on high note with Rick Ross single

It’s been a great year for rapper Kwesta who is bowing out of 2019 with the release of the visuals for his latest single, ‘I Came I Saw’.

Since teasing his fans with short clips and images from the video shoot he had with Maybach Music founder Rick Ross in 2018, Kwesta has managed to deliver on the full package.

Though he is no stranger to international collaborations, having featured American rappers Wale on Spirit and Rich Homie Quan on Run it Up, Kwesta can now boast partnering with a multi-nominated Grammy artist, record label owner and millionaire “boss”.

Edgy track with Rick Ross

The two hip-hop heavyweights paired up on the track, which is an infusion of Kwesta’s smokey, hoarse vernacular flavour and Rick Ross’s deep baritone, giving the jam an edgy feel. The song also has a house touch to it with a sample from Township Funk and includes a line with Ross saying, “I came I saw Kwesta and his grandma in Katlehong”.

Ross is referring to Katlehong township on the East Rand which is also the location of the video and where Kwesta was born and raised.

Later in the music video, the rappers can be seen performing and having a blast at a night club. Scenes of a yellow vintage car also give the video an old-school 1970s vibe.

The song has been gaining traction on social media with musician and hip-hop artist Tumi Molekane, who goes by the moniker Stogie T, giving it a thumbs-up.

“Kwesta released a song with Rick Ross. I don’t think you guys understand how far we have come. This is a big deal. Not because we want validation but because we want to be measured by global standards. There is some kid right now learning to rap who will benefit from this move,” Molekane wrote on Twitter.

Mixed reaction to ‘I Came I Saw’ on Twitter

Kwesta has been trending on Twitter with mixed reaction to the lyrical content of the track.

Kwesta has even more reason to celebrate this weekend as he came in at No 6 six on MTV Base’s hottest MCs list which was dropped by the music channel on Thursday.

Ross and Kwesta are also part of the line-up for the #HeinekenExperience (which also includes American rapper Rich Homie Quan) at the Mustang Room, in Johannesburg, on Saturday 14 December.
