First look: Inside North West’s newly built R140m ‘state-of-the-art’ school

Waterkloof Hills Combined School has finally opened in Rustenburg, North West, and boasts 32 smart classrooms, sports fields and more.

The ministers of basic education and minerals and energy have just unveiled the R140 million school in the mining community of Rustenburg, North West. The school, Waterkloof Hills Combined School, has been described as “world class” and boasts a whopping 32 smart classrooms, a multi-function room, and a number of science laboratories.

Speaking during the unveiling on Friday 5 August last week, Minerals and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe called the school a “state-of-the-art project”.

A one-of-a-kind learning institution has finally opened up its doors in Rustenburg and has been described as a world-class school.

Waterkloof Hills Combined School is situated within the Waterkloof Hills Estate which was built to provide Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) employees with family housing in a secure lifestyle estate.

In 2019, RBPlat and the Department of Education (NWDoE) entered into an agreement to construct the primary and secondary schools to the tune of R140 million, BusinessTech reports.

It is finally ready and will boost 2,155 learners. 1,280 of which will be primary learners and 875 secondary learners.

With 32 smart classrooms, a multi-function room, and science laboratories, it also has a 1,100-capacity school hall, 256 parking bays, a security gate, sports fields, libraries, sickrooms, and dining halls.

Transforming the future of SA

Speaking during the unveiling, Mantashe said the “infrastructure helps develop children and transform the future of our country”.

The Department of Basic Education said it welcomes the construction of Waterkloof Hills Combined School while RBPlat CEO Steve Phiri explained that it will not only be home to the children of the company’s employees, but will also welcome children from surrounding communities.

“Our purpose has always been to create economic value that can be shared with all our stakeholders and this project offers a legacy of sustainable benefits, through quality education, for the next generation of leaders in our communities,” said Phiri.
