A stunning four-bedroom mansion built in the beach-side town of Muizenberg has just hit the market for R57 million.

The mansion — with priceless beach views — was reportedly built for businessman John Garlick who started the Garlicks chain of department stores in South Africa. The mansion was designed by William Hood Grant, an architect who played a significant role in the early 1900s in Cape Town.

WILLIAM HOOD GRANT’S IMPACT ON CAPE TOWN ARCHITECTURE

It is reported that William Hood Grant worked as an architect in Cape Town from 1903. Grant was born in Dundee, Forfarshire, a coastal city in eastern Scotland. Grant relocated to Cape Town in 1903 after studying architecture and art at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Scotland.

Grant played a significant role in designing buildings in and around Cape Town. He designed several buildings including the Old White House Hotel and the Muizenberg Bathing Pavillion in 1928.

JOHN GARLICK’S R57 MILLION HOME

According to Pam Golding Properties, the four-bedroom mansion named Graceland was designed by William Hood Grant in 1914. The mansion has been featured in several local and international magazines for its stunning interior and beach views.

The home includes a library area and an informal “chef’s table” that leads onto a sea-facing patio. All four bedrooms in the house are en-suite, with two bedrooms overlooking the sea and the other two overlooking the garden and mountains behind the home.

The Muizenburg home is on sale for R57 million through Pam Golding Properties. The mansion was originally built for John Garlick, the founder of Garlicks, a department chain store in South Africa. Garlick opened his first store in 1875 and had stores in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Kimberly. The last Garlicks store shut its door in 1993.

John Garlick died in 1931.

STUNNING FEATURES

Shelly Keys, a Western Cape area manager for Pam Golding Properties told Business Insider that the R57 million mansion would appeal to a “discerning buyer” to use as a private residence or for other reasons.

“A stately home or it could become a boutique hotel or corporate headquarters for an international or local company,” she added.

The mansion is on a 10 900 ㎡ plot and has three dining rooms, a swimming pool, staff accommodation, a water feature and a study with a patio.
