Jim Carrey ‘sickened’ by Hollywood’s warm reception for Will Smith
Actor Jim Carrey says he would not have reacted as graciously as Chris Rock did, had he been slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars
Jim Carrey is far from being pleased with the fact that the Oscars’ audience gave actor Will Smith a standing ovation, not long after he lunged at comedian Chris Rock over a joke he had made about his wife.
In what will now become one of the most memorable moments in Hollywood history, Smith walked up to Rock on the Oscars’ stage and slapped him across the face. Rock poked fun at Jada’s bald head, comparing her with the female action character G.I Jane. She revealed earlier this year that she had been diagnosed with Alopecia, a condition which leads to hair loss.
Smith was back on the stage about 40 minutes later to receive the Oscar for ‘Best Actor’ for his performance in King Richard, a real-life film about the rise of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. The audience cheered Smith for his win, even getting up from their seats – something which Carrey has strongly condemned.
“I was sickened. I was sickened by the standing ovation,” Carrey told Gayle King in a “CBS Mornings” interview that aired on Tuesday, 29 March 2022.
“Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore,” he added.

Jim Carrey says he would not have reacted as graciously as Chris Rock did, had he been slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars. Rock has been praised for keeping his cool after the incident and continuing with the show, presenting the Oscar for Best Documentary.
Carrey says Smith should have been arrested and that he would have sued him. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) says Rock has declined to pursue charges against him.
“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever. It’s going to be ubiquitous. You know, that insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter [, that’s OK, but] you do not have the right to walk up onstage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”
