After two years of hard Covid-19 restrictions – the Durban July is returning to a sense of normalcy – this time under the new sponsorship of Hollywoodbets.

South Africa’s premier horse racing and fashion event will take place on 2 July at the Greyville Racecourse in Durban.

DURBAN JULY ‘NOT AFFECTED’ BY CITY’S WATER WOES

The city of Durban has had a rough few months, including flooding and the interruption of services. However, the Durban July will not be affected, claims EThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela.

In April and May, the city of Durban and KwaZulu-Natal province at large suffered devastating damage to homes and infrastructure. Thousands of people were left without homes and access to water. According to Bloomberg, the province also suffered 459 fatalities.

Weeks later, Durban residents are still grappling with water shortages and have been subjected to rotational cuts. Last week, the city also warned residents not to swim at beaches due to harmful bacteria detected in the water.

Speaking to the Citizen, Mayisela claimed that the Hollywoodbets Durban July would go to plan.

He told the publication: “There are no areas near the venue for the July that are going to be affected by the current water rationing. It largely affects areas that are in the periphery of the city that is supplied by Durban Heights, and the city and nearby suburbs are fed by the Wiggins Water Treatment Works.”

MASKS OFF AND HATS OUT

The Hollywoodbets Durban July will come amid South Africa’s recent repeal of Covid-19 restrictions – which include the wearing of face masks.

The theme for this year’s event is “Show me the honey” and will be interpreted through blooming flowers, buzzing bees, and dripping honey!

The Hollywoodbets Durban July will also be giving away prizes to the best-dressed guest on the day.

  • Categories include:
  • Most striking couple
  • Classic racewear male
  • Classic racewear female
  • Exceptional race day hat/fascinator

Mayisela adds that Durbanites will also get to enjoy the Hollywoodbets Durban July from around the city via big screens.

He added: “There will also be five satellite venues for the HDJ experience so that people can enjoy the races and the fashion at outlets near them. These include Mojos Carwash and Shisanyama (Wiggins), Max’s Lifestyle (Umlazi), Magaba lounge (Hammarsdale), Maqaqa Lounge (Umbumbulu) and Under the Moon (Ntuzuma)”.
