A lot of movies released this year were either a hit or a miss, but the following franchises blasted our socks off (again) and clocked in the necessary numbers. Maybe one of your favourites made it onto the list! Let’s take a look at the highest-grossing movie franchises of 2017:

Marvel Cinematic Universe:

According to Statista, The Marvel Cinematic Universe series took the top spot, with a total worldwide box office revenue of $13.47 billion. Of the sixteen films in the series, the average revenue was estimated at $792 million per film. The Avengers was the franchise’s highest grossing film with a worldwide box office revenue of $1.52 billion.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — which was produced on a budget of $200 million – starring Chris Pratt also made the cut with $863.6 million.

Despicable Me:

According to MSN News, each Despicable Me film clocked in $500 million.

Pirates of The Caribbean:

Each single film grossed more than $650 million, and two – Dead Man’s Chest – broke the $1 billion mark.

Fifty Shades Darker:

The first film, Fifty Shades of Grey made more than the second, but still the second brought in a hefty $381 million worldwide.

The Fast and The Furious:

The action films combined to earn more than $5.13 billion worldwide, with the latest instalment making $1.24 billion worldwide.

Star Wars:

The Star Wars franchise alone earned $7.77 billion worldwide. Star Wars: The Last Jedi will surely pump up those numbers. The next movie is coming December 15.

Wonder Woman:

One of the most anticipated films of the year, featuring Gal Gadot, took in $821.8 million worldwide. The movie was produced on a budget of $149 million and is the second highest-earning movie in the D.C. Extended Universe franchise. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice previously grossed more than any other franchise film with $873.3 million worldwide.

Transformers:

Who doesn’t love Optimus Prime? The six-instalment series has earned nearly $4.39 billion at the global box office and holds the title of history’s number 12 most successful franchise. The most recent, Transformers: The Last Knight featuring Mark Wahlberg, earned $605.4 million.

Logan:

Hugh Jackman has played Logan a total of nine time in 17 years. The last film in the stand-alone Wolverine trilogy, Logan, earned $226.28 million at the domestic box office and $616.8 million worldwide, landing it at the top spot in the “Wolverine” franchise and the number three spot in the extended X-Men franchise, according to Go Banking Rates.

Resident Evil:

This year’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter earned $312.2 million worldwide and is the most successful of all six movies to date.

Other franchise movies that made the cut includes, Cars, Underworld, War for the Planet of the Apes, The Lego Movie, Alien and Spiderman.
