World Mental Health Day: Raising awareness and removing the stigma

‘Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act.’

Mental health has been an issue in society for a long time and the lack of understanding and awareness about about it has played a part in this. That’s why 10 October is World Mental Health Day and the entire month is marked as World Mental Health Month.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), the mandate is to raise awareness, educate and remove the stigma around it in society

Here are ways to raise awareness about it this month:

Open conversations

Because of the stigma that surrounds mental health, it is important to have conversations about it and the related illnesses. This conversation should also include kids.

According to Balance Treatment Centre, it is important for society to understand different mental illnesses and how they can affect communities.

It is important to constantly check on family and friends, especially if they have experienced anything that traumatic. And remember to be kind to people because you never know what they are dealing with.

Share screening sites

Balance Treatment Centre encourages people to share screening sites widely online. Screening sites are used to help determine if an individual is experiencing related illnesses or not.

Take care of your mental health

As much as it is important to check on your friends and family, it is also important to take care of yourself. AURORA Behavioural Health advises people to take mental wellness activities at home such as exercising, connecting with friends and family, and reading, just to name a few.

Awareness about symptoms of mental health-related illnesses

Being aware of the symptoms of related illnesses will better equip people on how to deal with them. It is also important for people to understand the causes of these illnesses and how they can be treated.

Take part in awareness events

If possible, attend awareness events, whether online or in person. Every event differs from others. But the same mandate of creating awareness and educating society remains.
