Three easy 20-minute workouts that’ll keep your bod in tip-top shape this summer

You know the old adage, summer bodies are made in winter, right? But how do you maintain your summer body during the summer holidays?

Whilst you may have spent the last few months getting beach-body ready, braced for a fortnight of sun-drenched all-inclusive, there are many out there who choose to stay on top of their exercise in between the burgers and bottles of Corona.

Of course, most people don’t want to spend an hour per day of their precious holiday time working out, and sometimes finding a gym or somewhere to exercise whilst on holiday adds to the struggle.

The good news, though, if you’re keen on hanging onto your hot holiday bod over the break, is that there is an array of bodyweight workouts that can be done in the confines of your hotel room. In no more than 20 minutes, these HIIT workouts will leave you feeling energised, trim and full of justification for your next jug of sangria.

Workout 1: Elevensies

We’re not gonna lie – this is a killer. It incorporates two different moves – a bodyweight squat and a press up. The squats burn the calories while the press ups give your chest and arms the pump the sunshine deserves.

Start with 1 x Press up, jump to your feet and do 10 x Squats. Drop back down and do 2 x Press ups, followed by 9 x Squats. (Each set always adds up to 11, so keep going until you are at 10 x Press ups and 1 x Squat.)

Rest for a minute and then start again with 10 x Press ups and 1 x Squat, then 9 x Press ups and 2 x Squats all the way back until you are at 1 x Press up and 10 x Squats. Aim to do this in 11 minutes.

Workout 2 – Tabata Thrasher

This is a 4-minute period of time that constitutes 8 x 20-second workout periods with a 10-second break in between each. Download an app which is pre-programmed with an interval timer so that you don’t need to clock watch.

For this workout, there are four different Tabatas with a 1-minute rest in between each, totalling a workout time of 19 minutes.

1 x Burpee

1 x Press up

1 x Alternating jumping lunges

1 x Mountain climbers 

Workout 3 – 20-minute full body smash

This workout is similar to the Tabata Thrasher in that you have a set amount of time to do as many reps as possible followed by a break. In this case, it’s 45 seconds of work followed by a 15-second rest.

There are 10 exercises in total to work through before repeating the circuit.

  1. Mountain climbers
  2. Push ups
  3. Squats
  4. Crunches
  5. Burpees
  6. Plank
  7. Jump squats
  8. Tricep dips
  9. High knees
  10. Lunges

Once you’ve tried these, it’s important to refuel. And we don’t mean the full English breakfast from the hotel’s buffet. Make sure you ingest quality protein as soon after your exercise as possible.
