The nutrition and health industries are exploding in new and interesting ways. Even more so than the fat-free diet craze of the 1980s, there has been a significant movement in our culture surrounding food awareness. We aim to live longer, better lives, prevent disease, and be satisfied with our bodies.

Even so, there is still much work to be done in terms of educating individuals on the most basic dietary rules. More nutritional theories are being advocated than ever before through the media, medical publications, and self-proclaimed online diet gurus. Perhaps it’s for this reason that you’re thinking about becoming a certified dietitian – to learn more about truly living a healthy life, and you want to share helpful information with the world.

Go visit an actual nutritionist

This may seem like a no-brainer, but there are plenty of people who have never visited a nutritionist in their life and want to become one. While you could argue you don’t need to visit a nuclear plant to become a physicist, being able to see what it is like to work with the patients up close can give you a better perspective on whether this job is suited for you or not.

Volunteer in the industry

Another way to get a better understanding of what it is like to be a nutritionist is to volunteer to help others in the industry. You can look for internships with others in the branch, volunteer at a health food restaurant or store, or join a non-profit organization that works to promote healthy living.

By doing this, you get to test the water, see what it is like to work within the market, and even learn how to become a certified nutritionist from great minds in the industry.

Learn things and test them on yourself

Learn as much as you can about nutrition and how it impacts your body by reading books, studies, reports, and talking to people in the industry. Then, to better understand what you are learning, test these things on yourself.

Putting theory into practice can help you understand others and their journeys, whether it’s cooking new recipes or making significant adjustments to your eating habits. You must be willing to attempt new things because if you are not, how can you expect your clients to be?

Think about your motivation

What motivates you to become a nutritionist? Is it because you want to learn more about living healthy, because you want to help people, or because you find it a profitable endeavor? No matter your reason, you need to ensure it is powerful enough to keep you going.

If there is a personal reason that got you involved in this, it may be a good thing to share with your clients to build trust and credibility.
