Every person has bad habits that impede their health. It can be the simplest of habits or more serious ones. Here are seven habits you should try to avoid.

The habit of sitting

When you work, study and socialise, you often do these activities in a sitting position. Sitting too much causes a number of health problems that we should not ignore. Sitting doesn’t involve tremendous energy, which means you don’t burn a lot of calories while doing it.

What this means for your health is that sitting too much can lead to health problems such as premature death, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity. If your work requires you to spend most of the day sitting, you should try to get up at least every 30 minutes. You can also try standing while talking on the phone, or walking for short distances to avoid the negative effects of too much sitting.

Don’t sleep too much

Sleep is a time when the body recovers itself. One would assume that the more sleep you get, the better your health. But research has shown that too much sleep can pose a number of health hazards.

The right amount of sleep varies from person to person, but the general measure of good sleep is somewhere between seven and nine hours. Consider it the optimal sleep pattern. Too much sleep on a regular basis is linked to higher death rates, depression, heart disease, obesity and poor brain function.

Kick the salt habit

Although salt can make our food taste better, it is not good for our health. The amount of salt you use has a direct effect on your health and too much of it is related to conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and stomach cancer. Salt is essential to our health, but it causes our bodies to retain water, and the extra water raises blood pressure. Ultimately, high blood pressure can put pressure on your heart, veins and kidneys.

Don’t drink too much fruit juice

It is a well-known fact that orange juice is rich in vitamin C, vitamin B and various antioxidants. Actually, drinking juice is considered a healthy habit. However, too much of it can be harmful to our health as it can cause tooth decay, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. The reason why drinking too much juice is harmful is because it contains a lot of fructose. No matter what kind of juice you drink, even the best quality juice still contains a significant amount of sugar.

Avoid public hand dryers

Hand dryers may be a more environmentally friendly solution than paper towels, but they certainly aren’t healthier for us. A study showed that hand dryers in public restrooms spread faecal germs on your hands. The mechanism that hand dryers use to blow air tends to transfer bacteria into the air of the toilet environment.
The results of this study indicate that many types of bacteria, including spores and pathogens, can be transmitted to your hands. The best thing to do would be to avoid hand dryers and dry your hands in a good old fashioned way using a paper towel.

Do not use earbuds

Cleaning your ears with earbuds does more harm than good. According to a study, the earpieces push the earwax further into the ear canal. It can also lead to infections, perforated eardrums, compacted earwax and tinnitus. In fact, it is recommended that you leave the earwax alone and let it fall out naturally. The earwax works like a filter for the ear canal and prevents dust and dirt from getting into it. Cleaning your ears with ear buds will make your ears vulnerable to contamination. If you still feel the need to clean your ears, you can clean them with a towel.

The habit of brushing your teeth immediately after eating

Although some of us tend to brush our teeth right after we eat, you should wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing, according to several studies. Our teeth are protected by enamel, and acids created by different foods can take away this protective enamel, which means that our teeth are most vulnerable after eating.

Fortunately, our bodies have a way of balancing the high acid levels with our saliva, but it takes time. So, if you brush your teeth immediately after eating, you will attack your teeth even if you use a soft toothbrush. It is best to make the saliva work and balance the high acid levels before brushing your teeth. The better alternative is to rinse your mouth with water or chew sugarless chewing gum while waiting for your teeth to recover.
