Discovery launches prepaid healthcare voucher scheme
The scheme is aimed at the millions of South Africans in formal employment who cannot afford traditional medical scheme cover.

Discovery Health has launched its Prepaid Health platform through which people who do not have medical aid can access GP services for R300.
“This convenient web- and WhatsApp-based platform offers any person living in South Africa the chance to buy vouchers towards high-quality, primary healthcare services in the private healthcare sector at highly competitive rates,” the company said in a statement.

The R300 GP doctor consultation voucher includes the medicines dispensed by the doctor after the consultation.
The Discovery Prepaid Health network of doctors is initially available in all the major metros in eight provinces and will continue to be expanded, Discovery Health CEO Dr Ryan Noach said.
“Our vision is that buying prepaid vouchers for high-quality private healthcare becomes ubiquitous, akin to buying prepaid airtime for our mobile phones. One of the most compelling features is that there is no limit to the number of vouchers one can buy.”
Existing Discovery Health Medical Scheme members can also buy a voucher and share its link with a family member or friend, who can then use it to visit a private GP.
Users of the platform will also be able to reserve available funds in their digital wallets for future use, the medical insurer said.
How to access Discovery Prepaid Health platform
To access the platform, users will need to register their profile on the Discovery website via the following link: https://id.discovery.co.za/Registration/identifier.
Once registered, users can then buy, load and redeem prepaid healthcare vouchers as follows:
- Buy:
- A Blu voucher or 1ForYou voucher with cash in-store, at one of 350,000 retail outlets, or
- A voucher through the Discovery Prepaid Health web-based app, or the Vitality Active Rewards Mall, using a debit or credit card.
- Load the voucher to their Prepaid Health balance using WhatsApp, www.discovery.co.za or the Discovery Prepaid Health app.
- Redeem: Use their Discovery Prepaid Health balance for any service available on the Discovery Prepaid platform, such as a GP + meds voucher.
