Hairstylist to the stars Sonnyboy Magano is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Sonnymagic Hair & Beauty Lounge and has worked with media personality Somizi Mhlongo, 947 radio presenter Anele Mdoda and fashion designer David Tlale.

SONNYBOY MAGANO’S HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Sonnyboy Magano has been passionate about the hair industry from a young age, dating back to when he would watch his mom get her hair done. From humble beginnings, he has built a “hair empire” over the past 22 years.

He began his salon out of a small room in Rosebank fresh out of school. His salon is now situated at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg.

“Inspired by what I saw, I asked around and was directed to a hair care and styling course with Sof ‘n Free and then started doing cuts for my friends,” said Magano to The Citizen.

DAVID TLALE’S DESIGNER HAIRSTYLE

Magano shared that he is the designer behind fashion designer David Tlale’s short and quaffed barrel hairstyle.

“We get at least one request a week for the style and the majority of customers submit an image, as they do not know what it’s called,” said Magano to The Citizen.

SOMIZI’S CREATIVE FLAIR

Magano approached Somizi to do his hair at Rosebank Mall and the actor’s usual stylist was not available at the time so Magano got his chance to fill the gap. He then became Somizi’s official stylist as they built a strong relationship.

“He was a person whose hair I wanted to do. I did his hair once and since then it’s been an ongoing friendship and became a staple with clientele,” Magano told The Citizen.

“When Somizi has a shoot coming up we meet and collaborate. There is a lot of preparation that is required. As a busy person and sought-after star, he keeps the shots from the shoots and releases them when required. Everything is curated, as all social media should be,” he added.

CUTTING-EDGE COLLABORATION IS KEY

Magano revealed that when it comes to staying creative and coming up with looks for the Idols SA judge, they work together with Somizi telling him what he envisions and Magano making recommendations and bringing it to life.

“We use hairpieces as well as colour, the pieces are prepared once we’ve conceptualised the particular look. He tells me what he envisions and I’ll tell him what I recommend and we join forces,” continued Magano.

He also said that Somizi allows his creative juices to flow trusting him with the process.

“When he did the Sama Awards in 2018, we had 10 hairstyles with each look and quick backstage changes. We prepared the hair in between and working quickly. I was pushing myself and it was amazing to try something, a real adrenaline rush,” he added.
