One of South Africa’s most opulent homes, the “Gatsby”, is back on the market – this time for a reduced R92 million. And to sweeten the deal, the sellers are throwing in a Rolls Royce.

The sprawling, palatial private residence in Houghton Ridge, Johannesburg, is so opulent in both proportion and finish that it was named “Gatsby” in honour of the extravagant mansion that The Great Gatsby author Scott Fitzgerald’s character Jay Gatsby built to impress his lover.

At 2 000sqm, it offers eight en-suite bedrooms and 11 full bathrooms. Set on four levels, the mansion has a kitchen that, according to Chas Everitt International Property Group, will be the delight of any aspiring chef.

Party it up in your own private night club

Rare artworks, a private night club, wellness spa and gym, and two swimming pools are some of the features residents and visitors to the house can enjoy.

Chas Everitt Luxury Portfolio CEO Rory O’Hagan said that while the owners had to drop the original selling price of R120 million, there is still a demand for luxury homes and that including a Rolls Royce in the deal, was a deliberate marketing strategy.

Rolls Royce revs of creative marketing

“In this day and age, you need to be creative with your marketing. We thought it’s a different angle to offer a car with the house,” he said.
