GoDriveIn Movie and Roadhouse in Salt River located near Table Bay in Cape Town recently announced a partnership with Short & Sweet that will provide a free movie show every week for up to 50 cars from Thursday, 18 February.

Supporting Cape Town’s food truck industry

According to Cape Town etc, the collaboration is an effort to support Cape Town’s food truck industry. Moviegoers can head to 346 Victoria Road in Salt River, Cape Town from 18:00 onwards, where they will have a variety of food options to choose from including nachos and tacos, burgers and chips, rotis, as well as milkshake, waffles, pancakes and more.

The free movie will be showcased to the ‘first come, first serve’.

Here movies are projected onto a massive nine-metre screen and the audio is transmitted into cars via an FM radio transmitter. GoDriveIn offers a range of films that cater to families, adults and aficionados alike.

Drive-in culture making a comeback

GoDriveIn was established in October 2020 by Grant De Sousa and Tyrone Rubin, both very well known in the South African film industry.

An almost forgotten part of the cinema industry, the drive-in culture is making a comeback globally, driven in part by the temporary closure of so many movie-houses worldwide in the face of COVID-19

Those who cannot make the free movie night, can visit the drive-in three nights a week from Thursday to Sundays.

“The venue has morphed into a popular entertainment destination attracting people of all ages,” said De Sousa. “GoDriveIn has a life span that extends beyond the pandemic and the drive-in roadhouse is the first phase of our exciting vision for the space. GoDriveIn is also one of the best and safest ways to get back out into the world of real-time, real-life fun,” he concluded.

Tickets can be purchased online and at the entrance for R190 per car (five people per car). All movies are listed on Webtickets via
