Always dreamed of getting married in Italy?

According to Business Insider South Africa, a region in central Italy is offering couples money towards their wedding if they tie the knot in the area.

Lazio, a central Italian region which includes Rome, is offering couples the equivalent of R34 000 (€2 000), for wedding services. And yes, this includes tourists.

A statement on the region’s official website, explained that the new wedding fund, titled “Nel Lazio con amore,” or “From Lazio with Love,” will accept applications until 31 January 2023, or until the fund runs out.

Locals and tourists alike can apply for their share of the €10 million (more than R166 million) fund, on the conditions that they “marry or civilly unite in Lazio” between January 1 and December 31, 2022, and they “purchase services or products related to the event from Lazio companies,” reports Business Insider South Africa.

Cash fund aims to revitalise wedding tourism

Lazio’s cash fund aims to revitalise wedding tourism and address the economic crisis by supporting local businesses that lost customers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the statement.

Nicola Zingaretti, the president of Lazio, told the Guardian that the wedding sector, in particular, has “suffered badly from the economic crisis”.

The Lazio region is home to a number of heritage landmarks. Sites like the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain are historically known to be prominent romantic hotspots within Rome.
