Back in June, we reported that Fourways Mall was undergoing a makeover, with the proposed opening date slated for 22 August. Perfect time-keeping on behalf of the developers, as the improved mall reopened its doors this week.

At the time, Accelerate Property Fund’s Chief Executive Michael Georgiou said that the launch of Fourways Mall is “a 10-year vision which is finally being realised”, while COO Andrew Costa added:

“Our focus remains on tenant retention and introducing new tenants to our portfolio. Partnering with tenants and offering some incentives during these difficult economic conditions far outweighs the cost of replacing tenants.”

As it stands, the mall has doubled in size and is now larger than Sandton City, Pretoria’s Menlyn Park, Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Durban, and even Mall of Africa in Midrand.

Approximately 250 new stores were added to bring the store directory to a whopping 450 in total. Some of these include Checkers, Woolworths, Dis-Chem, Game, Pick ‘n Pay, Food Lovers Market, Cotton On, and H&M.

In addition, the mall now provides parking for more than 8 000 vehicles around its 52 entrances. Colourful nodes will help shoppers navigate through the maze of stores.

According to Accelerate Property Fund, Fourways has grown due to “urbanisation and urban sprawl”. It sits on the outskirts of the Johannesburg metropolis, putting it in the prime spot between Roodepoort and Sandton.

“It has experienced considerable growth in residential dwellings over the last five years. This makes it a value proposition for Accelerate to create a decentralised CBD.”

The fund’s priority was to “capitalise on Fourways Mall’s dominant position in this growing area and to partner with the Fourways Precinct to build the largest and most sought after Center in South Africa.”

A job well done, indeed. Netizens have taken to social media, sharing video clips of the new mall and urging South Africans to “come through to Fourways Mall.”

Some criticisms were noted, though. John Enslin said on Facebook that the parking lot was too far from the stores and remarked that it might pose a security threat, while Nicky Brussow added:

“I hope they increase security. I was pickpocketed after being in Dis-chem and on my way to Jet. Lots of complaints of distraction and bags stolen.”
